API students participate excursions designed to help familiarize them with the culture and surrounding areas of their host city and country. The following is a listing of potential excursions for API Auckland programs. API may need to modify the excursions offered in a given term due to travel restrictions or health and safety concerns.

  • Sky Tower & Orbit 360

Visit and experience the Sky Tower (the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere). After a walk around the tower and soaking in 360 degree views of Auckland, we indulge in a special dinner at heights!

  • Blue's Rugby

The best way to get to know New Zealand culture is through a good game of rugby! We’ll meet up, grab a bite to eat (meal not included in event), and take a train to the most famous Rugby field in Auckland - Eden Park, to watch our Auckland team take on another city!!

  • Rangitoto Island Hike

The group will a ferry over to one of Auckland’s dormant volcanoes and hike up to take in the spectacular views of the city!

  • Hobbiton Tour

Students will enter the magical world of ‘the Shire’ on this movie set tour to Hobbiton from Auckland. Students will see where The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed and pose for pictures in front of hobbit holes. The tour includes a visit to the party tree, Green Dragon Inn and Bilbo Baggins’ house, and an opportunity to learn from the guide about the making of the films. Afterward, enjoy a beverage in the Green Dragon Inn followed by lunch at The Shire’s Rest Café.

  • Tree Adventures & Surf Lesson

Students will enjoy climbing through an obstacle course high in the trees. We’ll stop for a short lunch break. After, students will try surfing on the West Coast of NZ - at a beautiful black sand beach.

  • Ziplining Waiheke Island

Students will ferry to Waiheke Island and enjoy a few hours of guided ziplining through the trees.

  • Comedy Night

Students will attend a local comedy club performance as a group to better understand classic Kiwi humor for a night full of fun and laughs.

  • Stand up paddle boarding

Students will travel to Hobson Bay, one of the closest beaches to the city, and enjoy a fun session of stand up paddle boarding at Fergs Kayaks. One of the many things visitors learn about New Zealanders is that they love to be outdoors and on the water! So gear up and get ready to paddle and embrace living life like the locals!

  • Auckland - Orientation

API New Zealand students will begin their program with a 2.5-day arrival orientation in their host city of Auckland. This orientation will provide the opportunity to get to know fellow participants, API, and university procedures, and rules, to explore your new host city and to allow for a smoother transition into New Zealand life. Students will spend two nights together in a hotel before moving into their semester housing on day three.

COURSE OFFERINGS

COURSE INFORMATION

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s largest and most comprehensive university offering courses in over 100 subjects. Study abroad and exchange students can select 3-4 courses to study per semester. Most courses include 2 lectures or classes per week and one tutorial or lab. Including assignments and out-of-class study, each course should involve about 10 hours of work per week.

CREDIT INFORMATION

Courses in New Zealand are commonly referred to as “papers.” Introductory papers are called 100-level papers; subsequent years or semesters are considered 200- and 300-level papers. 400-level papers are considered at the graduate level. Most papers are single-semester and are worth 15 points (credits). Minimum full-time enrollment at U of A includes 60 points (i.e. 4 papers per semester). One 15 point paper is generally equivalent to 3-4 U.S. semester credits or 4-6 quarter units. Given that point values vary, the way in which credits completed abroad will transfer to a student’s home campus will be at the discretion of the student’s home institution and should be verified in advance.
