API students participate in excursions designed to help familiarize them with the culture and surrounding areas of their host city and country. The following is a listing of potential excursions for API Japan programs. API may need to modify the excursions offered in a given term due to travel restrictions or health and safety concerns.

  • Hokkaido

Japan’s northernmost prefecture is also home to bubbling hot springs, stunning fall foliage, snowy mountains, and crystal blue lakes. From big cities like Sapporo to small farming communities, Hokkaido has it all. We will enjoy the region’s seafood, milk tea, and onsens (hot springs), experiencing what makes Hokkaido such a unique destination for tourists from Japan and around the world.

  • Nikko

Just a two hour train ride from Tokyo, Nikko is a UNESCO world heritage site that is famous for the 400-year old Toshogu shrine, national park, 97 meter tall Kegon Falls and wildlife (yes, including monkeys!). A natural, spiritual retreat from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, we will recharge with Nikko’s famous soba noodles in their traditional onsens.

  • Nagano

One of Japan’s most livable cities, Nagano is rich in history and culture. It is known for its nearly 1400 year old Buddhist temple, Zenko-ji, as well as the Togakushi Shinto shrines. We will also visit the Mastushiro castle park, known for its samurai heritage dating back to the 17th century, and enjoy some of Nagano’s traditional dishes, like miso ramen.

  • Yokohama

Japan’s second largest city is also its industrial hub. A modern port city, Yokohama is a city of “firsts” in Japan - the first English-language newspaper (1861), first confectionery and beer manufacturing (1865), first railway station (1872), and power plant (1882). It blends tradition with industry, with Nissan and Isuzu headquartered there, along with the first Chinatown in the country.

  • Mishima Sky Walk

Featuring some of the best views of Mt Fuji and it’s surrounding scenery, this pedestrian skywalk is 400 m long - a great place to take an instantly iconic picture and conquer your fear of heights, all in one!

  • Cultural Events & Activities in Japan

Participate in tea ceremonies, learn sushi making, experience baseball games, see a sumo wrestling demo firsthand, and more!
