API students participate in excursions designed to help familiarize them with the culture and surrounding areas of their host city and country. The following is a listing of potential excursions for API Paris programs. API may need to modify the excursions offered in a given term due to travel restrictions or health and safety concerns.

  • Normandy - Honfleur & Etretat

Honfleur is so utterly enchanting, it's hard to remember that it was built essentially for commerce. Its harbor sits in a great location, tucked away on the southern side of the Seine’s estuary. During the Hundred Years War, the French king had this strategic spot fortified, but that didn’t stop the English from taking over for several decades.

The little town of Etretat is located in the Pays de Caux, on a section of the coast of Normandy called “La Côte d’Albâtre”, and is renowned for its impressive white cliffs, featuring arches, a large rock needle-like structure and tunnels (which Impressionists painted so memorably).

  • Burgundy

Appreciated by gastronomes and wine lovers, Burgundy is also a delight for nature lovers and old stones. Known all over the world for its prestigious vineyards and authentic cuisine, this beautiful rural region will delight you with its peaceful groves, vineyards, mysterious forests, streams and large lakes.

The architectural heritage is also omnipresent as evidenced by the great number of castles, the abbeys, the famous Beaune hospices or the majestic Basilica of Vézelay World Heritage Site UNESCO.

  • Brussels & Brugges or Gent - International Excursion

Brussels is at the same time the capital of Belgium, Europe, and comic books. It's in the Flemish part of the country but most people there speak French. It is well-known for its cuisine with the local waffle, chocolate and moules-frites, but also for its historic and architectural landmarks registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We'll also get to visit either Bruges, its canals, cobblestone streets, and medieval buildings or Ghent, known for its universities, cultural life, and feudal architecture."

  • Angers

Capital of Anjou, Angers is a city of art and history, a haven of remarkable culture thanks to its castle, King René, and to its Museum of Fine Arts where visitors will discover works dating from the 14th to the 21st century. Students can visit the Gothic Cathedral of Saint Maurice and the Museum Jean Lurçat, which presents beautiful pieces of contemporary tapestry, echoed in the beautiful hangings of the Château d'Angers. Located in the Loire Valley, Angers also has a wealth of natural beauty thanks to its three rivers flowing into the Loire.

  • Bordeaux

Bordeaux is one of the largest cities in France and is located in the South West of the country, not far from the Atlantic Ocean.

The center of a legendary winegrowing region, this vibrant and sophisticated city is a top gourmet and cultural destination. Synonymous with fine wines, Bordeaux is one of France’s most beautiful and elegant cities - indeed, half the city is Unesco-listed, making it the largest urban World Heritage site. Visitors appreciate both the monumental stone architecture and attractive nooks and crannies of this city, with its fascinating historical and cultural heritage around every corner. Also, it is now fastly connected to Paris with a new TGV line connecting both cities in just over two hours.

  • Alsace & Strasbourg

The Alsace region is located in the Rhine plain in the northeastern part of France, bordered by Germany and Switzerland. Over the centuries Alsace has been back and of forth under the control of France and Germany. This has resulted in a uniquely bicultural identity, which is reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and dialect. The region is well known for its flowery villages with timbered houses, its wine road, its blue Vosges mountains and forests with pleasant pine scents as well as its medieval eagles nest castles. Strasbourg, the capital of the region, also plays a significant role in Europe: it is the formal seat of the European Parliament.

  • Discovery day in the Ile de France region

There is no need to go miles away from Paris to discover a rich and unexpected heritage. This excursion may follow in the footsteps of the impressionists (Auvers sur Oise, Chatou…), or seemingly take a journey to the middle ages (Provins), or visit Versailles off the beaten path.

What You’ll Study

TOTAL CREDITS - 12-15 semester credits

Students in this program select a combination of international business courses taught in English, and may also brush up on their French language skills while abroad.

Founded in 1974, PSB Paris School of Business (formerly ESG MS) is a European elite Grande Ecole management school that combines academic excellence, international awareness, and professional experiences.

Students will be able to select up to 5 business courses from the International BBA program. If they so choose, students may elect to pursue the Certificate of Business, wherein they will select 3 courses from one Major track, along with another 2 electives.

Paris Teaching Experience

All students with 4 semesters of college-level French (equivalent to the intermediate level) or more are able to participate in the teaching internship for an additional 3 credits. Beginning and intermediate-level students can also do the internship, but are not eligible to earn credit or a grade for the experience. Spaces are limited and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. An additional fee is charged for the internship.

Students teach English in a French school. This is a unique experience for API students in Paris to get to know Parisians and Parisian life from the inside, not only through the teenagers in the classes students teach, but also from the teachers that students assist. The regular professor asks the student what is to be taught and helps students prepare for class.

In order to get the 3 credits, students are required to teach English about three hours a week, to keep a journal where all course plans and weekly evaluations are registered to present it in French at the end of the semester and to write a final internship paper (in French) analyzing the French teaching system and their perception of French society through their own teaching experience.

TRANSCRIPTS

Students receive a transcript from the Paris School of Business upon completion of their program. If a student enrolls in the API-led course or the teaching internship, they will receive a transcript from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. If a student enrolls in the University of Connecticut elective courses, they will receive a transcript from the University of Connecticut.

Students who choose to live with families are provided with five breakfast meals and two dinner meals per week with the family, along with a grocery stipend card to offset the cost of meals. Host families serve as a unique introduction into French culture and may be made up of a married couple with children, retirement-age couples, or a divorced or widowed woman with or without children. Most families live in apartments with 2-4 bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a living/dining area. In some cases, there may be another API or international student in the same apartment. While most family placements offer a single room, some students share a double room.

Students also have the option of living in shared apartments that are located throughout Paris. Most are designed to house 4 students in double-occupancy bedrooms, though some may be larger. Meals are not provided, however, apartments are equipped with kitchen appliances, and students receive a grocery stipend card to offset the cost of meals.

Students in the dorm generally live in single rooms. Some rooms may be equipped with a sink, though students share bathroom and kitchen facilities. Most of the other students in the dorm are American. Students who select the dorm option are responsible for their own meals, though they will receive a grocery stipend card to offset the cost of meals.
