Study Filmmaking or Screenwriting in the French Riviera this summer! Spend 3 weeks in Cannes, France, one of the most popular places to be in the south of France during the summer. Famous for the glamorous Cannes Film Festival, this is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the art of filmmaking or screenwriting and explore a possible career in the film industry!

Develop your craft in filmmaking as you study the fundamentals of audiovisual production through applied workshops and lectures by industry professionals. Students will work in teams to produce a short film as the final project of the course. Students will workshop techniques that approach screenwriting both creatively and critically with your voice, your words, your story.

Application Requirements

  • Minimum 2.0 G.P.A.
  • Completed API application
  • Official transcript
  • University Approval Form (U.S. applicants only)
  • Open to undergraduates with one year of college, graduates, and adult learners
  • Non-native English speakers must provide TOEFL scores of 79 or above or IELTS scores of 6.5 or above to show proof of English proficiency
  • Entry requirements for US and EU passport holders: a valid passport
  • Entry requirements for all other international students: consult the French Consulate in your home country
  • Students who are currently enrolled at The New School will not be required to submit a letter of recommendation, official transcript or university contact information form.

  • Marseille, France

    One overnight excursion to Marseille, which is home to some very unique sights and landmarks. It is France's largest port, making it the 7th largest in Europe. Then there are two stunning cathedrals, Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica and the Cathédrale La Major. Finally, Old Town is one of the prettiest neighborhoods in the whole of France. Located on a hillside, it is packed with boutiques, pretty cafes and bars and galleries.

  • Sainte-Marguerite Island

    Enjoy a day trip to Sainte-Marguerite Island, which just a 15 minute ferry ride from the port of Cannes. This gorgeous, well-preserved island is home to many beautiful walking trails filled with greenery and exotic plants, ready and waiting for you to explore!

All of the building blocks necessary to ensure your fundamental understanding and appreciation for the craft of filmmaking or screenwriting are in place with this program. API’s collaboration with Parsons Paris and the ESRA International Film School bring together an immersive applied learning experience in the iconic setting on the French Riviera! The program offers a choice of 2 courses and is open to undergraduate students, graduate students and adult learners looking for the opportunity to study Filmmaking or Screenwriting in this globally recognized seaside city. Each course is worth 3 undergraduate credits from Parsons Paris, who issues the transcript.

Find Courses

Housing for this program is in shared rooms in student housing near the beach, which is located 20 minutes away from campus by bus and only 10 minutes by bus from downtown Cannes. There is a canteen and a small restaurant on the student housing campus, plus a supermarket nearby. Also available to students are a study room, laundry facilities, a small theatre and a chapel. Linens, wifi and periodic cleanings are included. Single rooms may be available for an additional fee and availability is not guaranteed.
