API students participate excursions designed to help familiarize them with the culture and surrounding areas of their host city and country. The following is a listing of potential excursions for API Gold Coast programs. API may need to modify the excursions offered in a given term due to travel restrictions or health and safety concerns.

  • AFL Game

    Students will watch and learn about the iconic Australian sport, Aussie Rules

  • Wildlife Sanctuary

    Voted one of the top tourist destinations on the Gold Coast, this trip allows students to visit with unique Australian wildlife such as kangaroos, koalas, dingoes, and wombats!

  • Gold Coast Hinterland

    On this guided tour of the Gold Coast Hinterland, students will check out the stunning waterfalls and experience guided rainforest walks in Springbrook National Park.

  • Byron Bay

    The excursion to Byron Bay will give students the chance to immerse themselves in Australian culture. Students will enjoy the views from Australia's most easterly point. We will visit a community organic farm for an Aussie BBQ, gain some insights into the indigenous culture of Australia and get a first hand experience of the people and culture around them.

  • Stradbroke Island

    Students will explore the world’s second largest sand island, known as “Straddie”. See the untouched beauty of the beaches, rugged coastline, lakes, and spot the wildlife including koala’s, kangaroos, turtles and dolphins. When in season, students may even see whales!

  • Wildlife Conservation OR Environmental Conservation

    Students will participate in an API Gives Back Activity involving wildlife conservation or environmental conservation. This may involve e-adoption of an endangered species, tree planting, or participation in “Clean up Australia Day”.

What You’ll Study

TOTAL CREDITS - 12-16 credits per trimester

API students at Griffith will be able to take courses in a number of subject areas, including business, criminology, creative and visual arts, education, engineering, health, music, sciences, tourism and hospitality, and more! Students can take courses at the Brisbane campuses (Nathan, South Bank, Mt. Gravatt), or the Gold Coast Campus. Griffith University also holds AACSB accreditation.

Griffith University offers a wide variety of courses in the following subjects, the vast majority of which are open to study abroad students: Architecture, Construction and Planning, Business and Government, Criminology and Law, Education, Engineering and IT, Humanities, Languages and Social Science, Music and Performing arts, Science and Environment, and Visual and Creative Arts

Courses at Griffith University consist of a mixture of lectures and tutorials. Laboratory and field experience may also be key components of specific subjects. Generally, lectures meet 1-2 times per week in large lecture halls, whereas tutorials are typically conducted once per week in smaller groups. Self-directed study and outside reading are also important components of the course structure.


Griffith University (Brisbane) in Australia operates on a credit ‘point’ system. A typical course at Griffith is equal to 10 credit points. Full-time status is 40 credits (typically 4 subjects). 1 subject at Griffith University is equivalent to 3-4 U.S. semester credits or 4-6 U.S. quarter credits. Students should be sure to check equivalencies with their home university in order to maintain their full-time enrollment (12 U.S. credits).

Griffith University Honors Programs

Griffith Honours College Responsibilities Include:

Meeting with Manager, Griffith Honours College: The Manager of the Griffith Honours College (GHC) will be the students' personal mentor for the semester. GHC Manager will take Study Abroad students for coffee (probably in a group, depending on campus) when they first arrive.

Professional development plan meeting: GHC Manager will also have one-on-one sessions with the students. One-on-one meeting(s) will primarily focus on developing a professional development plan where the GHC Manager will review students CV’s and identify gaps which need to be filled in order for them to take steps closer to their ‘dream career’.

Griffith Honours College Buddy: Students will be matched up with a current GHC student buddy – usually based on same study area or personal interests

Compulsory events: Students will have a few compulsory events to attend throughout the year.

Griffith Honours College workshops: Students will have the opportunity to attend a series of GHC workshops throughout the semester focusing on areas such as critical thinking, crucial conversations, leadership, networking, mental health first aid etc

Volunteering opportunities: Students will have the opportunity to participate in various volunteering activities throughout the semester, usually focused on the community or environment

Griffith University Certificate Options

Specialized Semester Certificate - This certificate program provides an opportunity for students to gain recognition and experience in a specialized study area offered by Griffith University. The certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete at least 3 courses from one of the available specialties, including arts/humanities, education and law, environmental management, international business, marketing, multimedia, and sustainability. Students should have some experience in the field of their specialty. A typical full-time study load is 4 courses per semester, so students in this program can still take 1 additional course outside of the certificate to complement their semester abroad. Griffith University Internship Opportunities

Community Internship Program - Griffith offers a 10 CP (3-4 U.S. semester credits) free-choice elective course to all students who have completed a minimum of 80 CP of study. This 50-hour minimum internship opportunity provides an opportunity for students to develop a range of professional and personal skills while making a difference in their community. The community internship may be related to the student’s discipline studies or could be an opportunity to explore working with an organization outside of their normal discipline learning context. Community Partners who have joined with the University to offer internships to students include organizations, schools, government departments and corporations engaged in not-for-profit community activities.

All API Gold Coast students will be housed close to each other in student halls of residence on/near campus. Students will have their own private bedrooms, and share common areas such as a kitchen, dining/lounge room, and bathroom facilities with their flatmates. Self-catered options available at the Gold Coast campus. The housing cost includes utilities, linens, WIFI and kitchen supplies (in most placements).
