API students participate in excursions designed to help familiarize them with the culture and surrounding areas of their host city and country. The following is a listing of potential excursions for API Brisbane programs. API may need to modify the excursions offered in a given term due to travel restrictions or health and safety concerns.

  • Byron Bay - Orientation Program

    API Brisbane students will begin their program with a 2.5-day arrival orientation in Byron Bay. This orientation will provide the opportunity to get to know fellow participants, API and university procedures and rules, to explore the new region and to allow for a smoother transition into Australian life. Students will spend two nights together in a hostel before moving into their semester housing on day three.

  • AFL (Australian Football League) Game

    AFL (Australian football) is unlike any other sport in the world. Originating in Victoria, it has spread around the country over the last hundred years. Enjoy your first AFL game at The Sydney Cricket Ground.

  • Cairns

    Students fly to Cairns for a three night adventure. Activities include a whole day out on the Great Barrier Reef, an Aboriginal cultural experience, a wildlife experience with a Koala photo included, and a visit to the world’s oldest rainforest!

  • Gold Coast Hinterland

    On this guided tour of the Gold Coast Hinterland, students will check out the stunning waterfalls and experience guided rainforest walks in Springbrook National Park.

  • Stradbroke Island

    Students will explore the world’s second largest sand island, known as “Straddie," where they can see the untouched beauty of the beaches, rugged coastline, lakes, and spot the wildlife including koalas, kangaroos, turtles and dolphins. When in season, students may even see whales!

  • Wildlife Sanctuary

    Voted one of the top tourist destinations on the Gold Coast, this trip allows students to visit with unique Australian wildlife such as kangaroos, koalas, dingoes, and wombats!

  • Wildlife Conservation OR Environmental Conservation

    Students will participate in an API Gives Back activity involving wildlife conservation or environmental conservation. This may involve e-adoption of an endangered species, tree planting, or participation in “Clean Up Australia Day”.

What You’ll Study

TOTAL CREDITS - 12-16 credits per trimester

API students at Griffith will be able to take courses in a number of subject areas, including business, criminology, creative and visual arts, education, engineering, health, music, sciences, tourism and hospitality, and more! Students can take courses at the Brisbane campuses (Nathan, South Bank, Mt. Gravatt), or the Gold Coast Campus. Griffith University also holds AACSB accreditation.

Griffith University features an Honors College program (extracurricular), as well as a community internship offering (for credit). For more information on these options, contact the API Australia Program Manager.

COURSE OFFERINGS

COURSE INFORMATION

Courses at Griffith University consist of a mixture of lectures and tutorials. Laboratory and field experience may also be key components of specific subjects. Generally, lectures meet 1-2 times per week in large lecture halls, whereas tutorials are typically conducted once per week in smaller groups. Self-directed study and outside reading are also important components of the course structure.

CREDIT INFORMATION

Griffith University (Brisbane) in Australia operates on a credit ‘point’ system. A typical course at Griffith is equal to 10 credit points. Full-time status is 40 credits (typically 4 subjects). 1 subject at Griffith University is equivalent to 3-4 U.S. semester credits or 4-6 U.S. quarter credits. All API Brisbane students will be housed in a student apartment complex within a 20-25 minute walk/bus ride to all Brisbane campuses. Students will have their own private bedrooms, and share common areas such as a kitchen, dining/lounge room, and bathroom facilities with their flatmates. The housing cost includes internet, utilities, linens, and kitchen supplies.
